Ammunition
At Bitterroot Outfitters, we require the use of premium, controlled-expansion ammunition to ensure consistent, dependable performance in the field. Proper bullet construction is critical for achieving clean, ethical harvests—especially in the varied terrain and shot conditions encountered across Idaho and western Montana.
As a proven baseline, Brandon recommends a minimum 170-grain bullet for optimal penetration and energy transfer, particularly when pursuing larger-bodied game. Heavier-for-caliber bullets provide more reliable performance when angles aren’t perfect and conditions demand deeper penetration through bone and muscle.
Elk & Bear:
170–200+ grain premium bullets (bonded or monolithic) for maximum penetration
Mule Deer & Whitetail:
150–180 grain premium bullets that balance expansion and penetration
General Rule:
Prioritize bullet quality and weight over velocity—consistent performance in real-world conditions matters more than speed on paper
